What Is Advent? A Season of Hope, Waiting, and Preparation

Next week marks the beginning of Advent. Advent is the beginning of the Christian year, a four-week journey of slowing down, lifting our eyes, and preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus afresh. It’s a season marked by hope, longing, and quiet expectation as we remember Christ’s first coming and look forward to His coming again.

In the midst of busy diaries, crowded shops, and to-do lists, Advent gently invites us to pause… to breathe… to make room.

Here are a few simple ways to make the most of this season:

  • Take a moment each evening to pray. Tradtionally in the Anglican church we have often used the words “Come, Lord Jesus.” in our prayer at this time

  • Read a short piece of Scripture each day—maybe start with Luke 1 or Isaiah’s promises of hope. You can subscribe to our devotional here if it would be helpful!

  • Practise small acts of kindness in your street, workplace, or school.

  • Set aside a little quiet time each week to reflect, rest, and notice God’s presence - maybe you;’d like to join us on a Sunday evening as we reflect on our advent book together?

  • Join us in worship on Sundays, as we journey together towards the joy of Christmas.

Wherever you find yourself this year, we pray that Advent may be a gift, a time to remember that God draws near, bringing light into every shadow and hope into every heart.
